The content of these articles came of no surprise to me. Since i dont personally own an ipod(probably the only one in my age group who doesn't), this is not a big concern to me. However, i do remember my mom constantly bugging my brothers to keep the volume down. As a kid, you don’t take your parents warnings too much into consideration. You’re young and naïve and you’re sure that hearing loss is only a problem to old people. You always think that it would never be you. I now understand that her worries and concerns were fundamentally correct.
It’s a little scary to think how much damage adolescents are casing to their hearing on a daily basis. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, “the number of Americans age 3 and older with some form of auditory disorder has more than doubled since 1971, from 13.2 million to about 30 million today. Of those, one-third are said to be the people with noise-induced hearing loss. ” These figures are distressing especially when we can prevent this. Informing people about the consequences of loud music can hopefully make them reconsider their actions. Is the instant gratification of loud music worth losing your hearing for?
One thing I disagree with is the federal lawsuit that was filed against Apple claiming that the devices they produce causes hearing loss. This reminds me of the lawsuit that was filed against McDonalds claiming that the food they served caused obesity. Every adult should know right from wrong; therefore, they should exercise these concepts by making the right decisions. “The risk is there but the risk lies with the user and they set the volume.” People should stop looking for a scapegoat and realize that they are ultimately to blame.
