Cover Story: Jack Johnson-The Dude Abides-Rollingstone.com

Jack Johnson is one of a kind. Not only is he a professional surfer and a filmmaker, but he is also a well known singer/songwriter. Although surfing was his first love, music always came easy to him. After suffering a horrible surfing accident, Jack Johnson began to exert his creative energy towards music and filmmaking. He attended UCSB and graduated with a film major. It wasn’t until after college that he discovered that surfing was not his only talent.
Jack Johnson’s mellow, laid-back attitude is a direct reflection of his music. His feel good songs have captured the attention of a broad audience. Some may question how he achieved to become so appealing to an audience that ranges from school kids to surfers. One possible explanation has to do with the personal touch he adds to his songs. If I had to describe Jack Johnson in three words, I would definitely use humble, mellow, and real. Most of his songs are very personal; they are like sneak peeks of his life. He emphasizes the importance of family, love, and nature in his music. Eddie Vedder, a fellow musician and good friend of his, states that “It’s his connection with the planet, his connection with nature, his connection with the ocean, his connection with family[that sets him apart from other acoustic musicians], and it all comes through in the music.” With millions of fans and multiple albums topping the charts, he is clearly one or rock’s biggest stars; however, he doesn’t let the fame and money go to his head. Jack Johnson is definitely one laid-back, cool guy.
